Keighley Area Health and Well Being Conference - feedback

Date: Wednesday 12th November 2008         Venue: Tae Kwon-Do School of Excellence

Initial feedback on the conference was positive, with 70 plus delegates in attendance from a range of statutory and voluntary and community sector organisations. The purpose of the event was to map existing health and well being services in the Keighley locality, identify gaps and strengthen partnership working across organisational boundaries

Staff at the Tae Kwon-Do School of Excellence opened the conference with an ‘ice-breaker’ leading delegates in a Tae Kwon-Do routine. Throughout the day delegates were then given the opportunity to  network, share good practice and contribute to topical workshops that arose from the Keighley Area Conference held in June 2008. The conference then ended  with a further practical exercise in self-defence delivered by the Tae Kwon-Do School of Excellence

Examples of local health & well being partnership working were very well received.  Nigel Cawthorne talked about the ‘Keighley Streets Ahead’ project, showing how communities working together with encouragement and support can improve living conditions, resulting in increased well being for all those involved.  John Dennis, from Sport Keighley, talked about how “Keighley has so much out there but we need to let people know and involve them in all that is going on”. John Philip and Alex Brown of the Keith Thompson Centre, highlighted what is available at their centre and how the 2,000 people going through their doors each week gained so much to help with their health and well being and stressed the importance of this facility and others like it in continuing to do so.  However, help is urgently needed to improve the condition of their building if the activities are to continue.

Improved co-ordination and communication between existing and developing health and well being services and activities was a main theme of the day and the proposal to set up a Keighley Health & Well Being Local Action Partnership was well received as one of the ways forward, building on the success of the conference.

A report will be available shortly including more details about how you can get involved with the Keighley  Local Action Partnership. You can get your copy of the report by contacting Tracy Higgins, Community Development Manager, Bradford & Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust Tel 01274 227580, email tracy.higgins@bradford.nhs.uk It will also be available here on this website.

Strong and prosperous communities

The Local Government White Paper was published on 26 October 2006. http://digbig.com/4nmtr or http://www.communities.gov.uk

NAVCA has welcomed the white paper and, in particular, the establishment of a 'new settlement' between communities and local government. It sets out the principles but much of the detail is still to be decided and NAVCA has set out its position in a Manifesto for Stronger Communities, which draws on our submission to the recent Comprehensive Spending Review. http://www.navca.org.uk/news/csrnavcaresponse.htm

NAVCA's response detailed response can be found at http://www.navca.org.uk/news/makingcommunitiesstronger.htm and http://www.navca.org.uk/news/navcaandlga.htm.
